This is James Trimarco, Communications Director for Tony Avella's campaign for Mayor of New York City. I wanted to make sure you know that Councilman Avella supports working towards the reinstatement of free tuition at CUNY. No other Mayoral candidate this year comes close to Tony in terms of supporting CUNY. As Friday is the first day of classes, we'd like to have Tony stand outside Hunter College—his alma mater—with a group of CUNY students who support free CUNY Tuition, and talk about the history and importance of this issue. This event will get media attention and help raise awareness about CUNY issues. Do you think you could come out and join us at Hunter College this Friday at 11:00 am? Volunteer Opportunity: Volunteer Rape Crisis Advocates Needed

Bellevue Hospital

Program:
Rape Crisis Program

Description:
Bellevue Hospital's Rape Crisis Program is looking for individuals 18 and over, to volunteer as advocates in the emergency rooms at Bellevue Hospital Center and NYU Medical Center. Advocates respond to the emergency room to support sexual assault survivors during their ER visit, to ensure that they have the support and information they need at such a critical time. Advocates must be able to respond to the emergency room within 30 minutes of being contacted and must be able to remain with sexual assault survivors for the duration of their ER visit.

We provide a 40-hour training course, at no cost, in return for an 18-month commitment to being on call (by phone or pager) twice a month (evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays). When called in for a case in the Emergency Department, volunteers are reimbursed for taxi expenses to and from the hospital. Additionally, volunteers must go through a medical clearance process in our Employee Health Service, for which there is no cost.

The 40-hour training will consist of:

* Three full weekend days 9am to 5.30pm (October 26, Nov 5 and Nov 12), and

* Four Thursday evenings 6pm to 10pm (October 22 through November 12).

* Excellent writer.

* Strong critical thinking skills.

* Detail-oriented.

* Comfortable being filmed.

* Basic video editing knowledge is highly desirable.

Students Active for Ending Rape (SAFER) is currently preparing for a year of exciting new projects. We are in the process of expanding our reach in order to alert more students of our services and to put college sexual assault back on the national stage. In order to do this, we need a dedicated intern to help out with some of the nuts and bolts of the operation.

The Communications Intern will work with the Communications Coordinator on a number of tasks, including:

* Track relevant press on rape and campus sexual assault.

* Update existing databases of student contacts.

* Help create and maintain a calendar of relevant events.

* Brainstorm and help develop a strategic communications plan.

* Assist with the implementation of new projects as needed.

There will also be opportunities for written work, so strong writers are encouraged to apply. This internship is perfect for a student majoring in Communications with an interest in social justice work, as well as students interested in nonprofit administration/management or anti-sexual violence work.

This is a semester-long internship, running from September through December. The intern should be prepared to work 8-10 hours a week (depending on timing of projects), though s/he will largely be able to create his/her own schedule. Some evening work will be required as the Communications Coordinator is only available to meet in person after 5pm. The intern should expect to meet with the Coordinator on a weekly basis.

The Girls Empowerment & Leadership Initiative (GELI) is a program of the Sauti Yetu Center for African Women. Its purpose is to offer a leadership development and academic enhancement experience to African immigrant girls that is culturally relevant and gender-sensitive. Participants are introduced to the program during the summer through a 9-week summer leadership development group that focuses on cultural negotiation and self-esteem building using the theater arts. During the academic year, we offer specialized support to African immigrant girls to enhance their academic opportunities. Specifically, students are assigned an Academic Enhancement Coach and have the opportunity to attend weekly TESOL Power Reading/ Writing Workshops.


The Academic Enhancement Coach is responsible for:
--------------------------------------------------

* Serving as a role model to program participants

* Tutoring the student in school subjects for at least one hour per week

* Assisting in the development of an Academic Enhancement Plan (AEP) for their assigned student

* Tracking the student&rsquo;s progress on the AEP

* Attending Academic Enhancement Activities every six weeks

* Documenting all activities and submitting paperwork to Sauti Yetu Center for African Women

* Attending monthly supervision with GELI Program Manager

The average expected time commitment per week is 4 hours per week over the academic school year (October- June).


Eligibility Requirements:

* Women between the ages of 20-33

* Current residents of New York City

* Currently enrolled or recently graduated college students (graduate or undergraduate) who have completed at least 2 years of higher education

* Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA

* Have some experience working with youth

Preference will be given to those candidates with direct experience in Africa and/or with African immigrants.

Dear M. Alam,

Good news! Backed by you and thousands of other students, faculty and staff across the five boroughs, the New York City Council successfully restored roughly $27 million in funding to the City University of New York (CUNY) in this year's budget.

I would like to extend a huge, heartfelt thank you to everyone, especially my colleagues Council Members Charles Barron and Peter Vallone Jr., who campaigned so vigorously on behalf of CUNY and its students.

Thanks to this amazing outpouring of support, we were able to restore a significant portion of the budget cuts that were originally planned for CUNY's six community colleges in this year's budget.

We also added $2.75 million in funding to the Peter Vallone Scholarship. This, along with the $6.75 in baseline funding for the scholarship that we successfully fought to include in the budget year after year, will bring the total level of funding for this program up to $9.5 million.

And we fully restored funding for the Center for Puerto Rican Studies ($470,000), the Dominican Studies Institute ($470,000) and the Murphy Institute Center for Worker Education ($250,000), keeping these widely-used resources open and available to all students.

The Council and I realize more than ever how important it is for us to invest in CUNY and the programs and services that students need.

While we did a really good job rallying together to protect funding for CUNY in this year's budget, we still have a tough road ahead of us. By all estimates the City's budget gap could reach $5 billion by 2011, and we will have to fight just as hard (if not harder) to help keep the dream of a college education within reach of all New Yorkers.

Taking place at various venues throughout the city, the festival will highlight an eclectic look at dance, featuring artist Ian Archer-Watters' comedic rendition of The Swan, a jazz performance at Joe's Pub, a series of plays and performances presented at the historic Hudson Guild Theater, a variety show at the Lincoln Center Barnes and Noble, and many more events.
