Defend Dr. Carhart's Clinic Next Weekend!

Women need you in Nebraska!

Send a message of support to Dr. Carhart
take action

After taking action, please support our work!

Action Needed:

1. Join NOW President Terry O'Neill in Nebraska to defend Dr. LeRoy Carhart's women's health clinic on Friday and Saturday, August 28-29, with Kansas and Nebraska NOW.
2. Send your thanks to Dr. Carhart for his steadfast commitment to trusting women.
3. Sign NOW's Pledge for Reproductive Freedom.

"Dr. Carhart saves women's lives, and we need to stand with abortion providers like Dr. Carhart to say that his life is precious, too," says NOW President Terry O'Neill. "Please join me in Nebraska to stand with a man whose compassion and dedication make it possible for women to own their lives."

Background:

Defend Abortion Rights at Dr. Carhart's Clinic August 28-29
Lies, intimidation and threats further a climate of violence and murderous terrorism against women's fundamental reproductive rights -- and women need you to join NOW's grassroots activists in Nebraska. Defend Dr. Carhart's clinic with NOW President Terry O'Neill on August 28 and 29.

Kansas NOW and Nebraska NOW are organizing a peaceful clinic defense to counter a demonstration by Operation Rescue. Roll up the map, start packing up your car and get details for how you can help at the Kansas NOW website.

Send Your Thanks to Dr. Carhart
Less than three months after the cold-blooded murder of Dr. George Tiller in his own church, violent anti-abortion extremists have intensified focus on Dr. LeRoy Carhart, an abortion provider and ardent defender of women's fundamental right to the full range of reproductive health services.

Dr. Carhart has continuously stood up for women. We must not only stand up for him, but also thank him for his continued commitment to all women, including women whose lives depend on having a late-term abortion. Send your thanks to Dr. Carhart now.

Sign NOW's Pledge for Reproductive Freedom
If you haven't done so already, take a moment to sign NOW's Pledge for Reproductive Freedom. As activists, we must redouble our efforts to maintain safe and legal access to abortion and birth control.

Signing the pledge affirms you will not let women be intimidated by a right-wing movement perpetuating and condoning terrorism against women's clinics and health care professionals across the country. Sign NOW's Pledge for Reproductive Freedom.

GirlPower~Voices of a Generation: Teen Feminist Play

I just wanted to share with you information about a play which just made it into the Fringe Festival. It's an off-broadway play happening for the next few days. It's a monologue play called GirlPower: Voices of a Generation where girls in the play range from young teen to young twenties write and perform their own material. The play is about empowering females, especially teenage girls.  It addresses many social issues such as media and the effects on females and all of the good and bad that comes with becoming a young woman.

Since then the play has became so popular it has made it into the Fringe Festival (similar to the Tribeca Film Festival, but for plays). If the show is a huge success, the actresses will get more subsequent, bigger roles as a result.  What better way to be entertained than to do it while helping these aspiring actresses?  If you're not interested, but know of someone who might be please spread the word.  It's really worth while.

So here are the details:

Performances will take place at:

The Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center

  107 Suffolk St .

  New York , NY 10002

Showtimes:

            Sunday 8/23 at 5:00pm

            Monday 8/24 at 5:00pm

Tickets: $15 which can be purchased at the door, but if you'd like you can visit www.FringeNYC.org for tickets and venue info.

Actual show description: Bold, smart, fresh.  For teens, by teens.  GirlPower: Voices of a Generation is an empowering, ensemble- driven collection of words written and performed by teenagers, struggling with issues they face growing up in today's world.  Through monologues and spoken word, the young women share their perspectives on love, relationships, the future, creating social change and finding power through theatre.

P.S.  guys found it funny too!

Laughter is the reason for RAPE?

I just read the following definition of Lulz on urbandictionary.com and I feel sick.

Beginning as a plural variant of lol, Lulz was originally an exclamation but is now often used as a noun meaning interesting or funny internet content.
Lol -> lul; lols -> luls; lolz -> lulz.

Lulz is the one good reason to do anything, from trolling to rape.

Tell Urban Dictionary
how you feel about this definition. This is what I wrote:

I find this definition extremely offensive. With 1/4 women & 1/6 men in college being sexually assaulted, it is insensitive, to say the least.

Sign the Petition to Support Reproductive Health Care

Your members of Congress are home for August, and they are under attack from those who want to destroy health care reform.

We need to speak up for reproductive health now, or our voices will be drowned out.

Sign PRCH's petition calling for the inclusion of reproductive health care in health reform. We will hand-deliver the petition to senators and representatives at their home offices this August. Can you add your name?

Tell Congress that patients need reform that covers reproductive health care. We can't let women's health get left behind.

Want to do more? After you sign the petition, you can sign up to help deliver it in person and meet with your members of Congress.

Thank you for lending your name to this crucial effort. Please forward this petition widely.

Sincerely,

Suzanne T. Poppema, MD

Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health

Women and families depend on comprehensive reproductive health care to stay healthy and safe. Under health care reform, every patient -- in any private or public plan -- must have affordable coverage for all reproductive health services. To ensure that patients receive the reproductive health care they need, health reform must enable physicians to provide coordinated, integrated, patient-centered, primary health care. Without these changes and coverage for reproductive health care, health reform will leave millions of women behind.

What's At Stake:

Four committees in the House and Senate have voted on health care reform bills and amendments to the bills so far. Numerous amendments would have restricted access to abortion, contraception, and other reproductive health services.

Many PRCH members and supporters called their senators and representatives to urge them to vote against the amendments. All but the most inconsequential of these amendments were defeated.

Physicians' voices have made a difference, but the fight is not over.

Members of Congress go home in August to hear from their constituents. We must keep up the pressure to enact health reform that protects and expands reproductive health care.

Sign the petition, share it with your colleagues, and help us deliver the signatures.

With your help, health care reform can succeed!

Campaign Expiration Date:
October 26, 2009

Action Alert: End Discrimination in the Workplace (Change.org)

End Discrimination in the Workplace

Dear hwrc,

In 29 states, it's still legal to fire someone because they're gay.

As a result, thousands of hardworking lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans have lost their livelihoods simply because of who they are.

But now, for the first time, we have the chance to end this unacceptable discrimination.

Just this month, the Senate has introduced the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would make it illegal to fire, refuse to hire, or refuse to promote employees simply based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

President Obama supports a fully-inclusive ENDA, but there are opponents of gay rights on Capitol Hill that will fight to preserve discrimination. To overcome this opposition, the Human Rights Campaign, one of our partners and a leading organization fighting for equality for all Americans, needs your help.

Stand for equality by asking your senators to support ENDA and end workplace discrimination today >

We all know how tough the economy is these days. People across the country are struggling to find and keep jobs, pay their kids' medical bills and put food on the table. For LGBT Americans, however, there's also the very real threat that they could lose their jobs simply because of who they are.

Right now, we have an opportunity, like never before, to make sure this kind of discrimination is no longer legal.

Tell your senators that even one more job lost to prejudice is too many.

Thanks for your voice in the fight for equality,

- The Change.org Team
