THE LINE Synopsis:
http://thelinemovie.org
A one night stand far from home goes terribly wrong. As the filmmaker unravels her experience, she decides to confront her attacker. Told through a “sex-positive” lens, THE LINE is a 24 minute documentary about a young woman – the filmmaker- who is raped, but her story isn’t cut and dry. Not a “perfect victim,” the filmmaker confronts her attacker, recording the conversation with a hidden camera. Sex workers, survivors and activists discuss justice, accountability and today’s “rape culture.” The film asks the question: where is the line defining consent? THE LINE was completed in July 2009.

Mike LentMike Lent: Volunteer for the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline

"I am currently studying psychology, and hope to become a clinical psychologist one day. After learning about the effect that trauma can have on a person, I wanted to start helping people right away and not have to wait until I'm finished with my schooling. RAINN's Online Hotline gives people a chance to seek help and information completely anonymously – that's less scary for many people, and therefore, we wind up able to help more people sooner. I'm glad that I can be a part of this system."

Volunteer Opportunity: Volunteer Rape Crisis Advocates Needed

Bellevue Hospital

Program:
Rape Crisis Program

Description:
Bellevue Hospital's Rape Crisis Program is looking for individuals 18 and over, to volunteer as advocates in the emergency rooms at Bellevue Hospital Center and NYU Medical Center. Advocates respond to the emergency room to support sexual assault survivors during their ER visit, to ensure that they have the support and information they need at such a critical time. Advocates must be able to respond to the emergency room within 30 minutes of being contacted and must be able to remain with sexual assault survivors for the duration of their ER visit.

We provide a 40-hour training course, at no cost, in return for an 18-month commitment to being on call (by phone or pager) twice a month (evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays). When called in for a case in the Emergency Department, volunteers are reimbursed for taxi expenses to and from the hospital. Additionally, volunteers must go through a medical clearance process in our Employee Health Service, for which there is no cost.

The 40-hour training will consist of:

* Three full weekend days 9am to 5.30pm (October 26, Nov 5 and Nov 12), and

* Four Thursday evenings 6pm to 10pm (October 22 through November 12).

Laughter is the reason for RAPE?

I just read the following definition of Lulz on urbandictionary.com and I feel sick.

Beginning as a plural variant of lol, Lulz was originally an exclamation but is now often used as a noun meaning interesting or funny internet content.
Lol -> lul; lols -> luls; lolz -> lulz.

Lulz is the one good reason to do anything, from trolling to rape.

Tell Urban Dictionary
how you feel about this definition. This is what I wrote:

I find this definition extremely offensive. With 1/4 women & 1/6 men in college being sexually assaulted, it is insensitive, to say the least.

V-Day Congo Director on Meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

V-Day V-Mail

Update from V-Day Congo Director Christine Schuler Deschryver on Meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

V-Day Congo Director and acclaimed women's rights activist Christine Schuler Deschryver met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday, August 11 in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Among those also in the meeting were Dr. Denis Mukwege, Founder of the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu and the V-Men's movement, and Chouchou Namegabe of AFEM Women's Media Association. Mrs. Clinton's trip to Congo was reported as extraordinary for a Secretary of State as she brought a sharp focus to the ongoing sexual atrocities against women in the DRC, as well as worldwide attention. We applaud Mrs. Clinton and Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer for their commitment to the women and girls of the DRC, and thank them for hearing our call.

Following is Christine's update from the meeting:

Hope among atrocities

On Monday, Dr. Mukwege (Founder of the Panzi hospital), Chouchou Namegabe (AFEM - Women's Media Association) and I took the boat for a 3 hour ride across the lake from Bukavu to Goma to take part in a panel on sexual gender violence in the DRC with U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton....it's now the dry season here but it doesn't change anything on the beauty of our Kivu.

When we arrived in Goma, we didn't have time to check in at the hotel and went straight to Heal Africa hospital to prepare for the visit of Mrs. Clinton and try to put together with all our colleagues from north Kivu the best methodology to convey our messages in a short period of time, lots of discussions but at the end we distributed the role to everyone...after leaving the meeting we were all very down and started to wonder what we were doing there, wondered if she will listen to us, wonder if it will just be another visit like we already had thousands of, with only "beautiful speeches" and promises. After a good family meal at Ester Ntoto's house (one of our amazing V-DAY activists based in Goma), we felt a little better and decided to go and rest.

On Wednesday, we met again (Dr. Mukwege, Chouchou, Ester and I) to prepare our discussion and to finalize the memo with our recommendations. Mrs. Clinton arrived a little later than expected and greeted all of us very warmly before going on a talk with two survivors. She said in an interview how overwhelmed she was about what she saw and heard and couldn't find words to describe the level of suffering and atrocities.

In the panel, there were 7 of us, mostly V-DAY activists, and all over the walls were our big campaign posters - STOP RAPING OUR GREATEST RESOURCE: POWER TO THE WOMEN AND GIRLS OF DRC. Before we started with the discussion, Secretary of State Clinton announced publicly that the U.S. Government will provide a $17 million plan to fight sexual violence in DRC. This money will be used to train doctors, supply rape survivors with mobile phones and cameras to document violence, to train a special police force essentially with female police officers to fight the violence against women, etc.... We were of course very happy.

She then listened attentively to each one of us and many times I saw tears in her eyes, I didn't really feel I had the Secretary of State next to me but we all had the feeling we were just between women, she was so humble, so human, so sensitive, she paid so much attention that I sometimes felt she was swallowing our words, for the first time since a decade hope was permitted among all the atrocities...

In our recommendations, we have asked for the following:

  • To help DRC to control and regulate trade of natural resources (the main cause of the war)
  • To help end the impunity of criminals and prosecute offenders in the Congolese Military
  • To call upon neighboring countries to find a political solution with their citizens (militias and other who still live in DRC)
  • To help DRC to have a good police force (essentially of women) and army

Mrs. Clinton said that she doesn't have a magic wand but in spite of this we absolutely have to work together to ensure the meeting results in real change and that she delivers. Like she said, "I hope that we will see the changes from within and outside that will lead to the end of these problems so that our children will not even know what we were talking about."

Action Alert: Help Save Crime Victims Fund

One of the most important things you can do to help victims of crime.

contact your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative and ask them to support "The Crime Victims Fund Preservation Act of 2009."

On Thursday, July 30, 2009, Representatives Ted Poe (R-TX) and Jim Costa (D-CA), co-chairs of the Congressional Crime Victim Rights Caucus, introduced H.R. 3402, "The Crime Victims Fund Preservation Act of 2009." This is a companion to S. 1340, introduced in June by Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Mike Crapo (R-ID) which would ensure a continued and substantial increase the the amount of Crime Victims Fund to be made available to support critical crime victim services. '

The Crime Victims Fund Preservation Act would establish a minimum VOCA cap through 2014 and still leave a substantial balance in the Fund to ensure ongoing stable services. Both bills specify the minimum amount of the Crime Victims Fund to be allocated in FY 2010 at $705 million and then increases the cap by 23 percent for each of the next four years. By FY 2014, the VOCA cap would be $1.6 billion, an amount that is essential to help meet victims' needs.

Please visit the National Association of VOCA Assistance Administrators for a fact sheet and complete information about the Act, and then please

contact your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative to encourage their support for this critical bill.

And please cut and paste this request and send it to your colleagues, families and friends -- Congress needs to know how important this bill is to provide continued, stable funding for our important work!

Yet Another Proof that RAPE is about power, not sex

The New York Times reports:
August 5, 2009

An excerpt:

For years, the thickly forested hills and clear, deep lakes of eastern Congo have been a reservoir of atrocities. Now, it seems, there is another growing problem: men raping men.

According to Oxfam, Human Rights Watch, United Nations officials and several Congolese aid organizations, the number of men who have been raped has risen sharply in recent months, a consequence of joint Congo-Rwanda military operations against rebels that have uncapped an appalling level of violence against civilians.

Aid workers struggle to explain the sudden spike in male rape cases. The best answer, they say, is that the sexual violence against men is yet another way for armed groups to humiliate and demoralize Congolese communities into submission.

The United Nations already considers eastern Congo the rape capital of the world, and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to hear from survivors on her visit to the country next week. Hundreds of thousands of women have been sexually assaulted by the various warring militias haunting these hills, and right now this area is going through one of its bloodiest periods in years.

To view the policy visit: http://cunypolicy.blogspot.com/

Direction to Hunter College: 695 Park Avenue | Take 6 train to 68th Street/the West building is on the southwest corner

stop by The Women’s Rights Coalition clubroom at TH 309

*****ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT, IF NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT PROJECT THE WOMEN'S RIGHTS COALITION & YOU WILL BE INVOLVED WITH IN COLLEGE.****

Did you know CUNY does not have a university-wide sexual assault policy?
You can help change that. We are in a historical time because a task force has been assembled with CUNY faculty, staff, administration, Public Safety & students to create this policy, which WILL go into effect next year for all 450,000 students.

****1/4 WOMEN IN COLLEGE WILL BE SEXUALLY ASSAULTED AT LEAST ONCE. PLEASE COME AND SHOW THE TASKFORCE STUDENTS CARE ABOUT THIS IMPORTANT TOPIC****

Make it a policy that reflects YOUR voice. Come to a public forum & tell the taskforce what you want to see on the policy. In attendance: Vice Chancellor of Legal Affairs for all of CUNY & other taskforce members, including women's rights coalition pres. Jerin Alam. FREE Food!

****WHAT WE WILL BE ADVOCATING FOR********
1. Mandatory prevention education, without which the policy will be uselss
(not having mandatory education, and only holding voluntary workshops will attract the people who probably don't need those workshops to begin with. Most people will not think of this until it's too late.)
2. anonymous reporting, found in the good campus policies in other schools
